Namaste !!
Greeting from Bali Island. I'm a Hindu from Bali Island, Indonesia. I have seen a pic & video about kumbh mela in gangga river. There I see many holy himalayan yogi wandering around naked. But why they are naked ? Is there any connection between their nudity with unity with the universal cosmic energy ?
Thanks before for your answer my brother and sister in dharma...
Aum Shanti...
Answer :
Hinduism is not a monolithic (one sect, one book, one supreme spiritual authority vested in one person). The others (westerners including the Islamic world) could not comprehend the thousands of sects, cults and rituals each of which could have been a religion in its own right. So they collectively named the whole bunch as 'Hinduism'. It is a recent phenomenon. Even we Hindus found convenient to call us as Hindus. But that word was not there in any of the scriptures. You can say that which is practised in 'Bali' is one cult, one procedure of rituals.
The Nagas (or Nanga Sadhus; Nanga means naked) that normally one sees at Kumbh mela are one such sect; so many that no one counted. These dedicated followers (meaning that they don't lead a normal married or secular life) of several sects have their rankings to take a dip in River Ganga.
So far as 'imterpretation' is concerned , there are as many. Though there are thousands of sects, there is lot that resemble between them. So, as per the common understanding, rejection of clothes is the rejection of mundane life and seeking the 'divinity'. Clothing is an artificial device invented by man and God doesn't recognise that. Everyone of us comes into this world without clothes and leaves without clothes; then why one should have them in between. Also, your time (which is fixed and limitedly less for the quest of God) gets wasted in procuring clothes, their wearing and upkeep. They move you away from the nature also; making it necessary to be under a shelter etc. The Nagas want to be free of it. It is also well known (you also know it, perhaps) that they don't care for food or cooking, but accept whatever they get out of begging from the house-holds, because food is needed for the body. Words and phrases like 'universal cosmic energy' were imposed by western, English speaking, curious men. The phrase might mean 'Brahman' (not to be confused with 'Brahmin', the first of the 4 castes in Hindu society) or 'Param atma'; English transliteration produces all kinds of confusion, but scriptures in Sanskrit language are clear). 'Unity' implies that 'Jeevatma' (individual soul) on its quest to join 'Paramatma'.
That quest may last a life time.
I am a nominal 'Hindu' like the nearly billion (1,000,000,000) others. I am very curious to know, keen to learn about the 'Bali' version of Hinduism. Also, much of religious observances and folklore has been absorbed in various Buddhists sects of SE Asia over two millennia. The country of origin of these is also forgotten.

Well, they are called Naga Sadhus!! The order of Naga Sadhus was founded by Dattatreya and the date of founding is lost in time. Perhaps an age when humans never cared for time. Shankaracharya first organized the Nagas to protect Sanatana Dharma. They never bother about the materialistic world and practice celibacy to escape from the cycle of rebirth and to merge with the Brahman. The Naga baba belongs to a sect that has no material bonding, lives a rigorous life and performs rituals to appease Lord Shiva. Naga sadhus are a large and a prominent Shaiva sect, who have existed since the prehistoric past. The Naga sect is subdivided into Akharas, i.e. 'regiments', like an army. Their display of weaponry sticks, spears, swords and especially the trident have a mostly symbolic function. Among the Nagas are many sadhus who walk about naked. In their nakedness they do not emanate sexuality. On the contrary, they control, inhibit the sexual 'vibrations', retaining its energy so it can be mystically transformed into psychic and spiritual power. The chilam, a clay pipe smoked by many sadhus through cupped hands, is filled with tobacco and hashish.
Sky is their cloth, earth is there bed!

Namaste,
Dear there are many school of thoughts in India.
You have seen the photo of Nagas.Their philosophy is that they do not require anything which may disturb them for their Saadhna.
They want to be free from any formalities or basic requirements like house, cloths etc.
Anyway that's their philosophy, but it doesn't mean that to find the God you have to be naked. No anybody with cloths may reach to the same level. Also it's not necessary that every nude person may reach to that level.
Hari Oum....
Answer :
. 'Naga Bawa' or nude sadhus have deep philosophy and they believe that all the directions are their cloths! So to reliase the God, they have even cut or remove the very worldly obstacle -cloth. They know their nudity is a havoc for the human society, so they live far off the human society, in forests, far hill tops or caves. When they come to the river bank on special occation, go and observe them, they do not have any lust in their eyes or in their actions.
Jai Shree Ram!!!!!
Answer :
Hare Krishna.
The holy men you saw photographs of are one who have renounced all material existence, even to the point of renouncing even a single cloth to cover themselves with.
Due to this, they are called the "sky clad" meaning that they are dressed in only the air.
They seek unity and oneness with Brahmana, the impersonal aspect of the Supreme.
namaste.
All glories to Lord Sri Krishna.

My dear friend i appreciate your interest, yes there is a connection between nudity and spirituality. Its a method they practise to kill destroy their ego moreover do u remember the dress u where wearing when you are born.Your are wearing because you are confined within your society and living life by the society norm which yogi don't have. You can also find videos about nudity and spirituality
Good luck
Answer :
Can we do it ? No.
It is our ego, attachment, shame, etc - all are attached to these coverings. We came nude and will go nude as that is what we inherited.
These yogis have reached beyond these ego, attachment, etc.
It takes courage, practice, determination and detachment to achieve this
